Jessup Hose Company Number 2, Station 25, operates out of a 6 bay, 6,000 square foot facility built in 1983 by the company and expanded in 1997.
Station 25 provides primary fire, rescue, basic life support (BLS), and emergency medical services (EMS) to the nearly 5,000 residents of Jessup Borough located in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. Station 25 also cross-responds with the Blakely Borough Fire Department (Wilson Fire Company Station 20 and Blakely Hose Company Station 22) to any alarms in Blakely Borough during workday hours (700 to 1700 hours). The company is also a charter member of the Lackawanna County Rescue Task Force #1, a countywide technical rescue team that operates as part of the Lackawanna County Emergency Management Agency. The company provides members and equipment to the task force, as well as acting as the medical arm of the organization.
On average Station 25 responds, on average, to 150 fire/rescue emergencies and 400 medical emergencies per year with another 10 non-emergency responses.
We own and operate two engines, a 1994 Sutphen 1500gpm rescue engine (Rescue 25) and a 2003 Ferrara 1000gpm engine (Engine 25). We also operate a 1986 Chevrolet pick-up forest/brush unit (Brush 25) on loan from the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry and converted into a fire apparatus by the members of the company. The Company also owns and operates two basic life support ambulances, a 2000 GMC Horton (Ambulance 25-8) and a 2004 GMC Horton (Ambulance 25-9). We also operate Pump Trailer 25 that is used for flooding incidents in the area.
Our active membership of 40 includes Paramedics, Emergency Medical Technicians, First Responders, Firefighters, Basic Rescue Practices Technicians and Vehicle Rescue Technicians. Of these members, nearly 15% (six) are female with four of them being Emergency Medical Technicians and four holding Company offices. We also have an active Junior Firefighter program which acts as a feeder to our department.
The Company conducts in-house EMS training that is approved for continuing education credits by the Pennsylvania Department of Health on the second Wednesday of the month. In-house fire/rescue training is held on the third Wednesday of the month and on average four state sponsored classes are held in the station each year.
Primary funding for our operations comes from resident envelope fund drives and other fundraisers such as an annual carnival and chicken barbecue. The Borough provides nominal funding from general tax revenues and insurance reimbursements and state and federal grants provide additional funds.
The Borough of Jessup lies near the geographic center of Lackawanna County and encompasses approximately 4,400 acres (6.8 square miles) with approximately 40% of the land area developed in residential, commercial and industrial uses. The population of the Borough as per the 2000 Census was 4,718 persons, approximately 40% over 65.
