JUNIOR FIREFIGHTER PROGRAM

The Junior Firefighter Program has been a part of Jessup Hose Company No. 2, for over 30 years. The program is one of the the first and oldest programs in Lackawanna County. It teaches youths ages 12-17 about fire and health issues and to train and gather firefighting and rescue experience. Many of our juniors apply for membership in our company upon reaching the age of 17.

WHY BECOME A JUNIOR FIREFIGHTER?

Becoming a volunteer is a great way to help your community. It is a rewarding experience and helps improve the town in which you live. Many juniors are able to incorporate their service into their graduation project for high school graduation. It teaches self reliance and also working in groups to accomplish large tasks.

ACTIVITIES

Our Junior Firefighter Program meets the third Monday of each month at 7:00 PM. During meetings the members discuss firefighting activities, school grades, fund raising, and other issues that they may face.

Juniors who reach the age of 16 and have completed the required training may ride apparatus to emergencies. These training requirements are set forth by the Fire Chief and comply with state laws governing child labor.

In addition, all juniors need parental permission and must be under the supervision of a line Officer (Chief, Assistant Chief, Captain, or Lieutenant).

TRAINING

Junior Firefighters, who are 14 years old, are invited to attend our regular monthly in house training. In addition, juniors are allowed to take state certified training courses. However, there are certain limits as to what type of training activities can be taken due to state child labor laws. By taking these courses and training the junior firefighter will learn nearly all aspects of firefighting and be prepared to be a fire fighter when they become of age.
